Being a single dad to two little girls, Emma, 4, and Lily, 5, was the hardest job I’ve ever had. My wife had left us to travel the world, and now it was just me and the girls. I loved them more than anything, but I was exhausted from balancing work, cooking, and everything that goes with running a household.

Every morning, I woke up early. The first thing I did was wake the girls up. “Emma, Lily, it’s time to get up!” ” I called softly as I opened the door to their room.

Lily rubbed her eyes and sat up. “Hi, Dad,” she said, yawning.

Emma, still half asleep, mumbled, “I don’t want to get up.”

I helped them get dressed. Lily picked out her favorite dress, the floral one, while Emma picked out her pink t-shirt and jeans. Once dressed, we all went downstairs.

I went into the kitchen to make breakfast. The plan was simple: oatmeal with milk. But when I entered the kitchen, I stopped dead in my tracks. On the table were three plates of freshly made pancakes with jam and fruit.

“Girls, have you seen this?” I asked, puzzled.

Lily’s eyes widened. “Wow, pancakes! Did you make them, Dad?” A plate of pancakes | Source: Mid Journey

I shook my head. “No, I didn’t. Maybe Aunt Sarah came by early.”

I picked up my phone and called my sister Sarah.

“Hey Sarah, did you come by this morning?” I asked as soon as she answered.

“No, why?” Sarah looked confused.

“It’s okay, don’t worry,” I said as I hung up. I checked the doors and windows, but everything was locked. There was no sign of forced entry.

“Is this safe to eat, Dad?” Emma asked, looking at the pancakes with wide eyes.
